What is World Kidney Cancer Day?

World Kidney Cancer Day is an annual event to raise global awareness of kidney cancer. It takes place in June every year and is initiative of the International Kidney Cancer Coalition.

World Kidney Cancer Day 2024

This year, Thursday 20 June 2024 is World Kidney Cancer Day.

The theme of #WorldKidneyCancerDay24 is ‘listening’.

  • Being listened to: Highlighting the benefits of shared decision making.
  • If you don’t feel listened to: Helping patients feel empowered to seek a second opinion.
  • Choosing who you listen to: Creating awareness around misinformation and how to check if sources are reliable.

About kidney cancer

Kidney cancer, also known as renal cancer, starts in the kidneys which are located in the middle of the back on each side of the spine. Kidneys filter waste products out of the blood to form urine.

Over 13,300 people are diagnosed with kidney cancer in the UK every year. It is more common in older people and in males.

Kidney cancer usually begins in the lining of small tubes (tubules) in the kidneys. There are several different types of kidney cancer including renal cell carcinoma (RCC), transitional cell carcinoma, renal sarcoma, and Wilms tumour. RCC is the most common type of kidney cancer.

How you can get involved

We believe it is time to tune in to the power of listening, because listening can make all the difference when it comes to improved patient experience. We understand how important it is to listen to find out how to support families living with Kidney Cancer.

The Urology Foundation believes that the stories of those affected by kidney cancer are important. Through understanding the experiences of people affected by urology diseases, we can take action to drive real change. If you would like to share your experience of kidney cancer, get in touch with us today HERE.
