Why is the campaign so important

In the UK, there are 10,300 new bladder cancer cases and 13,300 kidney cancer cases every year. Although incidences are increasing, there is poor awareness of these cancers particularly amongst specific communities including Black, Asian and minority ethnic groups and younger people.

What we’re doing to raise awareness

In 2023, as part of the NHS “Help Us, Help You” symptoms awareness campaign, we developed a programme of community based events to highlight ‘Blood in Pee’ as early warning signs of bladder and kidney cancer.  We held events at busy sites across three London Boroughs including the Ideas Store, East London Mosque, Stratford Library and Better Gym.  We spoke to over 600 visitors about these cancers, highlighting “blood in pee” as as early warning sign and encouraging them to meet with their GP or healthcare provider if they had concerns.  Our staff and volunteers gave away over 1800 free information cards and resources.

The campaign was so successful that we went on to deliver similar events at Asda stores, football stadiums and train stations, as can be seen here Health awareness programmes – The Urology Foundation.  We’ve also promoted the “blood in pee” message across other campaigns.
