About the APPG on UTIs

The APPG on UTIs bring together key stakeholders to raise awareness of the significant health, social and economic impact of UTIs and advocate for improved patient outcomes through better diagnostics, effective treatment options, and prevention strategies.

The APPG is co-chaired by Luke Taylor MP (Liberal Democrat MP for Sutton and Cheam) and Dr Allison Gardner (Labour MP for Stoke-on-Trent South).

The Urology Foundation is proud to act as the APPG’s secretariat, as part of our wider commitment to drive change in the field of UTIs and improve the outlook for patients. M+F Health Communications help us to fulfil this role by providing administrative and logistical support.

About UTIs

  • 50-60 % of females in the UK will experience at least 1 UTI in their lifetime
  • About one in five females will experience recurrent UTIs and those who have more than three in a year are more likely to continue to have them.
  • Males experience UTIs too and are usually associated with an obstruction in the urinary system, usually the prostate.
  • UTIs cause 200,000 hospital admissions per year, costing the NHS £600m per year
  • UTIs account for 50% of all antibiotic prescriptions

We are focused on calling for:

  • Better care for people with living with UTIs
  • Better and more accurate diagnostic tools
  • Investment in UTI research to develop new treatment options

Our work

The APPG on UTIs holds regular meetings to bring stakeholders together to discuss the key issues that are impacting the diagnosis and treatment of UTIs, agree recommended actions, and identify opportunities to advocate for better care across the NHS.

Why The APPG is important:

Inaugural meeting: The APPG held its inaugural meeting on Wednesday 10th December 2025. This provided an opportunity to elect the Chair and Officers of the APPG and discuss the group’s overall priorities and proposed work programme for the coming year.

Driving Innovation in UTI Treatment: The first policy meeting of the group took place on Tuesday 3rd March 2026. The title of the meeting was ‘Driving Innovation in UTI Treatment’. The event was hosted by the APPG co-chairs Luke Taylor and Dr Allison Gardner who welcomed people from across the UTI community. This included people living with chronic and recurrent UTIs, Parliamentarians, clinicians, researchers, professional bodies and charities in the space.

The meeting provided an opportunity to consider both the short and long-term actions needed to improve outcomes for people living with UTIs.

A summary of the meeting is available HERE.
